Wallabies' Uelese to undergo knee surgery

Wallabies and Melbourne Rebels hooker Jordan Uelese will have a knee reconstruction on Thursday after scans confirmed he has ruptured his ACL.

Wallabies and Melbourne Rebels hooker Jordan Uelese will go under the knife this week ending his hopes of returning to play this year.

The 21-year-old hurt his knee in the Rebels' Super Rugby win over the Blues on Saturday, ruling him out of this month's Test series against Ireland.

The Rebels announced on Tuesday that scans confirmed he had ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament, with Uelese scheduled for surgery this Thursday.

Rebels general manager Nick Ryan said the news was disappointing, with Uelese's season already interrupted by a shoulder injury.

"Jordan's injury is incredibly disappointing for everyone involved, but foremost for Jordan," Ryan said.

"Jordan is someone who has showed great resilience and dedication to his rehabilitation to return from a shoulder injury this season.

"His resilience will be tested yet again, but we are confident that Jordan will apply himself to the process to get himself back to playing."

The Rebels still have Anaru Rangi and Nathan Charles available to wear the No.2 jersey.

The Wallabies are yet to name a replacement in the Test squad for Uelese, who will also miss the Rugby Championship and the end-of-season northern hemisphere tour.
