Wallabies captain Michael Hooper has been involved in an incident in Byron Bay that attracted police attention.

Hooper, 23, was out in the NSW coastal town around 1.30am on Tuesday morning when a security guard reportedly saw his friend jump on a parked car on Bay Street and called police.

Police said the pair were seen pushing over a sign post.

It's believed Hooper later repositioned the post without damage.

Police expected to take action against the 23-year-old friend from Manly for causing damage to the car, but not Hooper.

The Australian Rugby Union said it has been made aware of the incident.

"Information from NSW Police confirms Michael Hooper was not involved in any serious misdemeanour," an ARU spokesman told AAP.

"Michael has been open and transparent with the police and Australian Rugby Union.

"We don't expect any further action to be taken in relation to Michael's involvement in the matter."

Hooper became one of the youngest men ever to captain the Wallabies earlier this year and he is favoured to retain the position ahead of next year's Rugby World Cup after leading the team on the recent tour to Europe under new coach Michael Cheika.
