Nick Phipps has been cleared of major damage after rolling his ankle on the weekend, paving the way for him to be named in Michael Cheika's 33-man Wallabies squad.

It was initially feared the NSW Waratahs halfback suffered a dreaded ankle syndesmosis injury in Saturday's defeat to the Highlanders, but is recovering well and will play against the Chiefs in Waikato this weekend if he is able to complete training on Thursday.

It's anticipated Phipps will be one of three halfbacks in the Australia squad to be named later on Tuesday for June's trio of Tests against Fiji, Scotland and Italy, along with France-based Will Genia and Brumbies dynamo Joe Powell.
