Walsh backs young Crows in AFL

Adelaide Crows coach Phil Walsh is backing a trio of unproven youngsters for key midfield roles against St Kilda in Saturday's AFL match.

Coach Phil Walsh says Adelaide can survive a plunge into the midfield depth at the AFL club.

The fifth-placed Crows have a senior onball core including Rory Sloane and Richard Douglas injured for Saturday's home match against St Kilda.

But Walsh is confident in the cover offered by 22-year-olds Mitch Grigg and Jarryd Lyons, and 20-year-old Matt Crouch, who have 40 games between them.

"It is lucky we have got pretty good depth there ... I have got a lot of confidence in Grigg, Lyons and Crouch to get the job done," he told reporters on Friday.

Sloane could miss six weeks after cheekbone surgery, Douglas (foot) is at least a month away and midfield newcomer Cam Ellis-Yolmen is sidelined for a fortnight because of a hamstring strain.

"A lot of people have come in and out of our team which makes it hard," Walsh said of the Crows, who had 13 players on this week's injury list.

"The thing I am excited about is the backline looks as if it's standing up and getting better each week and our forward line looks exciting.

"It's just our midfield where we probably haven't had the continuity."

The injuries will stretch the Crows against the 14th-placed Saints, whose last start comeback win against Western Bulldogs put Adelaide's Walsh coach on alert.

St Kilda came from 55 points down in the third quarter to pip the Dogs and impress Walsh in what he described as a "great game".

"We saw probably the vulnerability they have if you bring a certain style of game," he said.

"Then we also saw what they were capable of.

"They played a really exciting brand on the weekend and I'm on record as saying that is how I want us to play as well."

Walsh summoned Ricky Henderson, recovered from a pectoral injury, to replace Sloane while the Saints didn't change last week's winning side.
