The Australian War Memorial possesses a vast trove of artefacts, some on display but most rarely seen, except on a rare special occasion which happens this Saturday.

The memorial is opening its warehouse in the Canberra suburb of Mitchell to the public for its "Big Things in Store" open day.

This was last done in 2013. Past events have attracted big crowds.

This giant warehouse, the Treloar Technology Centre, is the memorial's conservation facility and store for large pieces of military equipment, including aircraft, vehicles, boats, missiles and guns.

Items of special significance include a Japanese Ha-Go tank captured at the Battle of Milne Bay and now undergoing restoration, a RAAF Caribou and Iroquois helicopter used in Vietnam and an Army Bushmaster vehicle damaged by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan.

Doors are open from 9am to 3pm with entry by donation.
