War memorial security under review

War memorial director Brendan Nelson says security at the iconic Canberra building is under review following events in Canada.

Security at the Australian War Memorial is under review following the terrorist shooting of a soldier guarding a war memorial in Canada.

Director Brendan Nelson said the memorial reviewed and adjusted its security arrangements following the recent increase in the national terrorism alert.

"In the context of the tragic events in Ottawa this morning, we are in discussion with the relevant security agencies with a view to examining what if any further changes to the security at the Australian War Memorial we may need to make," he told reporters on Thursday.

Dr Nelson said he would not give specific details about security arrangements and if any guards were armed.

But he said there were trained security personnel and those in public areas were trained to recognise any potential risks.

There's also an electronic security system.

"If there is any adjustment that is recommended by the relevant security agencies to the memorial's security arrangements, those changes will be made immediately," he said.

Dr Nelson said there was no specific threat to the memorial and it was important not to overreact.

"It's important that we do everything we possibly to see that Australians and our international visitors feel comfortable and welcomed in coming to this the Australian War Memorial and its iconic place in Australian life," he said.
