Warner marvels at Maxwell's reverse lap

There's few shots that David Warner is not capable of playing - whether in the textbook or not - but Glenn Maxwell produced one in Johannesburg.

David Warner has smashed switch-hit sixes but even he was astonished by one of Glenn Maxwell's unorthodox strokes in Johannesburg.

Warner and Maxwell shared a 161-run stand at the Wanderers, breaking records and piloting Australia to a dramatic five-wicket win over South Africa.

Maxwell was creative, even by his standards.

The 27-year-old regularly shuffled up and down the crease, leaping to the left one delivery then hopping to the right for the next.

Maxwell's most audacious strokes came when he flipped the willow in his hands and paddled the ball behind the `keeper.

"There were a couple of times there where I said to him just keep bat on ball, he likes to play his little reverse lap (instead)," Warner said.

"But that's just him, that's how it is.

"That's the way he plays when he's at his best.

"That's something he can do and he's capable of doing. I can't do that. If he can do that he can definitely play it.

"He's won us games, he's come in and scored plenty at the back end when we've batted first. He's an exciting player."

Warner noted there wasn't much communication between the duo during their Australian-record partnership.

"It's always great batting with Maxi. He's not really one where you need to go down and say anything to him," he said.

"He makes his mind up for himself ... we knew what we had to do."

Skipper Steve Smith paid tribute to the pair, who rescued Australia after they slumped to 3-32 in the sixth over.

"We didn't get off to a start so we were behind the eight-ball a little bit, that's why so much credit goes to Davey and Glenn," Smith said.

"They summed up the situation really well ... had great composure, played great cricket shots and got us into a position to win the game."
