Warne's 'thirsty' line of questioning hammered on social media

When Shane Warne alluded to getting hammered at the conclusion of the World Cup, he probably wasn't expecting to on Twitter.

But that's exactly what happened to the former spin king and Nine Network commentator who copped it from all quarters on social media for asking a number of Australian players their drinking plans after winning the World Cup.

Speaking with several of the victorious Australians, Warne seemed to have just one thing on his mind.

"Are you feeling thirsty?," he asked of wicketkeeper Brad Haddin.

Batsman Steve Smith was his next target.

"Are you going to have a bit of a drink tonight too Smitty? Are you going to get thirsty as well? The boys are thirsty they seem," Warne asked.

Smith quickly changed subject.

Then it was on to Shane Watson and Josh Hazlewood.

"So what's the plan - besides lots of drink and that. How long is that going to last. Just one night, two nights? We saw (coach) Darren Lehmann say it might last a week. Do you reckon it will go a bit longer than that?

"Go and enjoy yourselves guys. Hopefully we'll join you for a few."

The response on Twitter was swift.
There was plenty of scathing comments but also a bit of wit in response.
Some social media users also saw the funny side of the line of questioning making it onto Twitter, where the word "thirsty" has sexual connatations.

Warne took to social media to defend his line of questioning, laughing it off with the hashtag #thirsty.
