A high-profile terrorism expert says the case of an Australian teenager apparently involved in a suicide bombing in Iraq, is a lesson in how vulnerable youth are recruited into extremist groups.

18-year old Melbourne man Jake Bilardi is reported to have been among about a dozen IS extremists who set off suicide car bombs in the Iraqi city of Ramadi earlier this week.

A photo released on the internet shows a man resembling the young Australian in the driving seat of van, typically used by IS as mobile suicide bombs, with the words "may God accept him".

Terrorism expert at Monash University, Professor Greg Barton, told Phillippa Carisbrooke, Jake Bilardi was a prime candidate for a suicide mission.
