Warning over online dating scams

Australians seeking romance online are being warned to be on alert following an upsurge of scams.

While the internet is becoming a more acceptable place to find love, the number of online dating scams reported last year in Australia rose considerably.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says scams increased by 14 per cent and losses incurred by individuals totalled over $25-million dollars.

ACCC Deputy Chair Delia Rickard says all Australians need to be cautious when forming romantic relationships online.

She explained to Thisanka Siripala some the reasons for the sharp increase in scams.
