Warrington Wolves were nearly given a nasty surprise by London Broncos and Tony Smith admits his team need to keep battling if they are to get over the line and secure their Super League status.
Class eventually prevailed at Trailfinders Sports Ground in London as Wolves came from behind to defeat a spirited Broncos 40-38 in the Super 8s Qualifiers.
The Broncos had a 14-0 lead early on, but last year's runners-up battled back and were able to hang onto the victory after moving ahead.
Kevin Brown scored a pair of tries for the victors and Declan Patton kicked six goals, helping Warrington overcome a hat-trick from Jarrod Sammut.
Peta Hiku scored for the third consecutive game for Wolves.
Having secured their fourth victory of the Super 8s qualifiers, last season's beaten grand finalists are on the verge of guaranteeing their survival, but Smith has warned his charges that their defence needs to improve to finish the job.
"We did some really good things with the ball at times and they did some really good things as well," he said.
"I thought our defence was poor overall and we have some work to do there.
"They were always going to be a handful on this ground, but to go up by 20 points and leak 18 is still disappointing."
