Warrington hand veteran Westwood new deal

English Super League club Warrington have handed 37-year-old second rower Ben Westwood a new contract for 2019.

Warrington second rower Ben Westwood will once more be the oldest player in English Super League after signing a new contract for 2019.

The 37-year-old will enter his 18th season in the primrose and blue and his 21st in all, having made his Super League debut for Wakefield in 1999.

Westwood brought up his 500th career appearance in 2018 and played his 437th match for the Wolves in their Grand Final defeat at Old Trafford in October.

He played in all but four of Warrington's 37 league and cup matches in 2018, including both major finals.

Westwood said: "I'm very much looking forward to another season at Warrington.

"I'm still aiming to play as many games as I can going into next year. I've been here a long time and experience counts for everything so hopefully I can pass some of that on to the younger guys and play a part in them stepping up.

Westwood has played in five Challenge Cup finals and three Grand Finals with Warrington and also won 27 caps with England, playing in the 2008 and 2013 World Cups.

Warrington head coach Steve Price said of Westwood: "He's been a terrific role model. He's a first-class guy to coach; I love everything about him and what he stands for. He is the ultimate warrior."
