Warriors chairman stands down

Cameron McGregor has stepped down as Warriors chairman after a forgettable month for the NRL club.

Warriors chairman Cameron McGregor has stepped down, capping an unsettled month for the NRL club.

McGregor will instead assume the role of deputy chairman and be replaced in the top job by director Rob Croot.

Croot is managing director of Autex Industries, which this year purchased the club in partnership with the Carlaw Heritage Trust.

McGregor's resignation follows the departure of marquee Warriors playmaker Shaun Johnson which ended in a public slanging match between the two parties.

CEO Cameron George accused the now-departed halfback of not justifying his $1 million-a-year price tag.

Johnson was granted a release after being told he would not be offered a deal beyond 2019, prompting the New Zealand Test half to join Cronulla.

Johnson fired off a parting spray at Stephen Kearney, saying the Warriors coach "didn't like" him.

Johnson's departure leaves the Warriors without an obvious halves partner for Blake Green with untried youngsters Chanel Harris-Tavita, Hayze Perham and Adam Keighran battling it out.
