Former Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington said Thursday his resignation earlier this month was the result of him "not being true to his wife."
"After 42 years, I broke her trust. I'm here today to own that mistake and to apologise to her and to those I disappointed," Washington said of his marital infidelity.
Washington resigned from the Major League Baseball team on September 5 and said it was because of an "off-the-field personal matter."
He held a news conference on Thursday at a Dallas hotel, although he declined to go into details.
"I was not true to my wife," said Washington, 62, as his wife sat nearby. "I'm sorry for breaking the trust that I had with my wife.
"And for disappointing my players, disappointing my coaches, disappointing Major League Baseball and disappointing the Texas Rangers."
Washington had been the Rangers' bench boss since the start of the 2007 season.
The Rangers were 664-611 under Washington and won back-to-back American League pennants in 2010 and 2011.
Tim Bogar was named interim manager after Washington's departure.
