Washington to host NHL's Winter Classic

The home stadium of Major League Baseball's Washington Nationals will host the National Hockey League's Winter Classic game next year.

The National Hockey League's 2015 Winter Classic outdoor game between Chicago and Washington will be staged at the home stadium of Major League Baseball's Washington Nationals, the NHL announced on Wednesday.

The US capital's Nationals Park, which seats 41,546, will become the fourth baseball venue to be used as a stage for the annual New Year's Day attraction, following previous games at Chicago's Wrigley Field, Boston's Fenway Park and in Philadelphia.

Other outdoor games were staged earlier this year in iconic baseball settings as well, including at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles and Yankee Stadium in New York.

"Nationals Park provides an ideal setting for all the excitement," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said.

It will be the second Winter Classic appearance for both NHL clubs. The host Capitals won 3-1 at Pittsburgh in 2011 and the Blackhawks lost 6-4 to Detroit at Wrigley Field in 2009.

The 2014 Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium near Detroit attracted an NHL record 105,491 spectators.
