Water crisis forces locals to dice with crocodiles

A water shortage has forced some Brazilian residents to dice with crocodiles in order to stay clean and hydrated.

With soaring temperatures and low rainfall, the capital of Rio di Janeiro has gone through its water supply this summer faster than previous years.

Homes in Terreirao, a community in the suburbs of the city, have been without water for over a month, leaving residents with no choice but to collect water from a public water pipe next to a river inhabited by a dozen crocodiles.

"It is quite dangerous. We try to be as careful as possible, as there are no other places for us to fetch water. The water pipe here is the only choice. We are quite tired after working during the daytime and we still have to come here to get water in the evening," said Alexandra, a local resident.

"There once was a boy who accidentally fell into the river when driving his motorcycle nearby. A very small crocodile bit him severely. Now all the crocodiles here are big," said Serena, another local resident.

To ensure the safety of passersby, the community has built guard railings and moved the water pipe as far away from the crocodiles as possible.
