England coach Wayne Bennett was in the stands as a late penalty goal from Kurt Gidley got Warrington home 20-18 over Catalans Dragons on Friday night.
There was little to separate the Super League sides all night at the Halliwell Jones Stadium in Warrington but Gidley's second penalty in quick succession, and his fourth goal of the night, proved decisive.
Catalans led 16-10 at halftime after tries from Julian Bousquet and Fouad Yaha but Warrington replied after the break as Brad Dwyer added to earlier four-pointers from Ryan Atkins and Kevin Penny.
Pat Richards kicked five goals for the Dragons to become the seventh most prolific kicker in Super League history but it was not quite enough.
Brisbane Broncos NRL coach Bennett chose to watch the game during his brief and low-key visit to the UK.
The match's crucial play came in the 66th minute when with his side leading 18-16, Dragons winger Jodie Broughton completed a 95-metre try from a kick - following a breakout from Todd Carney - but the video referee disallowed the four-pointer for Gidley being taken high.
Instead of Catalans banking a handy advantage, former Newcastle utility Gidley took the two points to level at 18-18.
Warrington continued to press and Daryl Clark thought he had made the critical breakthrough as he forced his way over eight minutes from fulltime. He was denied after a lengthy video review but Warrington were instead awarded a penalty for a ball steal and Gidley decisively bisected the posts from out wide.
