We can become more feral, senator warns

Liberal Democrat David Leyonhjelm has warned the Senate could become more feral if the government changes electoral laws.

A Senate crossbencher has issued a none-too-subtle threat to the government if it proceeds with measures aimed at limiting the election chances of micro parties.

"If the government thinks it's dealing with a feral Senate now, wait until we're all sitting there knowing that we can't get re-elected and our parties can't win any more seats," Liberal Democrat David Leyonhjelm told Sky News on Thursday.

The senator was responding to a parliamentary inquiry that has recommended changes to the way Australians vote above and below the line on the Senate ballot paper.
