We need to perform or perish: Aussies

Australian batsman Adam Voges says Mitchell Marsh, as well as all his teammates, have to perform or perish.

Adam Voges has thrown his support behind the perform-or-perish edict given to Mitchell Marsh, describing everyone in the Australian line up as under pressure.

Heading into next week's opening Test against South Africa at the WACA, Steve Smith's side is a team under the microscope.

Marsh in particular has had the pressure piled on him with chairman of selectors Rod Marsh declaring the allrounder requires a century to release the pressure valve.

With Moises Henriques waiting in the wings, the 25-year-old is far from on stable ground.

When Voges was asked about whether Marsh would step up to the challenge he backed his teammate: "100 per cent. He's ready to go."

"We need to perform," Voges said.

"That's international cricket and that's the start of what's going to be a really exciting summer.

"South Africa are a very good side but I think people have to remember we're a very good side as well."

During his 18-Test career, Marsh has averaged 24 with the bat and taken wickets at 36.33.

He's been sometimes maligned, offering plenty of promise but so far failing to really deliver.

He scored 53 in his last Test outing, on the recent tour of Sri Lanka, however his return of 12 and zero and 2-110 for Western Australia in this week's Sheffield Shield match with South Australia only fuelled concern about his form.

NSW all-rounder Henriques was blooded on the third Test of Australia's tour of Sri Lanka and is coming off leading his state to a one-day cup win, having scored 85 in the final.

With the Australians facing a litmus test against the Proteas, spearheaded by tearaway Dale Steyn, Voges called on his teammates to embrace the challenge and prove themselves on home soil.

"There's one or two new faces but this group has played a fair bit of cricket together now.," he said.
