Australia has banded together with powerful international allies to demand tech giants do more to combat the circulation of child pornography.

Security ministers from the "Five Eyes" intelligence alliance - comprising the US, Britain, Australia, Canada and New Zealand - have demanded tech titans allow backdoor access to encrypted content.

The companies have been given until September to prove what action they have taken to combat the "abhorrent crimes".

Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton, who led talks on the issue of child exploitation, said the companies had a moral obligation to allow spies and law enforcement agencies access to encrypted data.
"It's about the privacy of the children," Mr Dutton told 2GB Radio from London on Friday.

"We need to protect the victims here. We need to make sure that the rights of the victims are put above the rights of the offenders. To most Australians, I think that's common sense."
