Weather-girl Kirk, Lee in LA Open hunt

Australians Minjee Lee and Katherine Kirk are among the contenders after the first round of the LPGA's Los Angeles Open.

The wind blew at Wilshire Country Club but Australians Minjee Lee and Katherine Kirk were not swayed during the opening round of the LPGA's Los Angeles Open on Thursday.

Lee and Kirk shot a two-under 69 to be three behind leader Inbee Park, on a day when the sun peeped through momentarily, the rain made a brief appearance and the wind blew.

Kirk was warned earlier of what to expect as the world No.56 was asked by Golf Channel the previous day to read out the forecasted weather conditions for the tournament.

"So our weather for Thursday looks like a morning chance of rain, it's going to be windy and a high of 68, Friday looks much better, just a little breeze in the afternoon and a high of 74."

She was spot on and responded with four birdies and two bogeys to join compatriot Lee in joint 10th position.

World no.15 Lee birdied the fifth and 13th holes and enjoyed a bogey-free round.

Su Oh (three over), Rebecca Artis (four over), Hannah Green (five over) and Sarah Jane Smith (eight over) face a struggle to make the cut.

Using a new putter, Park birdied four consecutive holes on the back nine before a bogey on the par-4 17th.

She quickly recovered and rolled in birdie putts on the second and fifth holes to finish off her round in front of a large contingent of South Korean fans.

Marina Alex was second with seven players, including Lexi Thompson, two shots further behind.
