As a series of heatwaves bake many parts of Australia, the Salvation Army in Melbourne has welcomed a proposal by the city's Lord Mayor, Robert Doyle, for an extreme weather policy for the city's homeless.

Mr Doyle says the policy could include provision of a cool shelter in the Central Business District for homeless people to use on hot days.

Major Brendon Nottle, who oversees the Salvation Army's operations in the CBD, told Georgie Moore, a meeting should be held to advance the proposal.
