The Billabong Pro in Tahiti has been put on hold due to torrential rain and onshore winds.

Organisers said on Wednesday that a lay day had been called and officials would reconvene at 7am local time on Thursday to assess conditions.

Defending world surfing champion Mick Fanning and seven other Australians breezed into the third round of the Billabong Pro on Tuesday.

The competition is the seventh stop on the 2014 Samsung Galaxy ASP World Championship Tour.
