Webb in rollercoaster start to LPGA event

Australia's Karrie Webb has mixed five birdies with a double bogey and two bogeys during the opening round of the Canadian Pacific Women's Open golf event.

Tour veteran Karrie Webb has made a strong recovery to keep pace with the leaders after the first round of the LPGA event in Ottawa.

Starting her round on the par-five 10th, Webb made a shaky start with a bogey before hitting back with a birdie on the par-three 13th.

However, Webb soon found more trouble with a double-bogey at the par-four 14th and a bogey at the par-four 16th to slip to three-over par after eight holes.

Calling on the experience of a distinguished LPGA career in which she has claimed 41 titles, Webb steadied with a birdie at the 18th.

She collected a further three birdies on her back nine to finish with a one-under par 70 to be the best-placed Australian with Minjee Lee.

Lee's round wasn't erratic with two birdies and a bogey after also starting from the 10th hole.

The Australians are five shots behind leader Marina Alxe who fired a six-under 66.

Sarah Jane Smith is one shot behind Webb and Lee but recent LPGA winner Katherine Kirk is in danger of missing the cut after a five-over par 75.

New Zealander Lydia Ko's bid to win a fourth Canadian Pacific Women's Open title is off to a solid start.

Ko also carded a one-under 70 to share 24th place with Webb and Lee, having mixed three birdies with two bogeys.
