Webb struggles in opening round

Karrie Webb is well off the pace after a poor start to the Victorian Open at 13th Beach.

Tournament drawcard Karrie Webb has stumbled to a four-over 77 to be well off the pace on day one of the women's Victorian Open at 13th Beach.

Playing in an Australian state Open for the first time as a professional, the seven-time major winner was eight shots adrift of England's Georgia Hall, who carded a four-under 69 to claim the clubhouse lead.

Midway through day one on Thursday, Hall was one shot clear of countrywoman Charlotte Ellis, who was three-under through five holes of her opening round.

Australians Rebecca Artis, Grace Lennon, Stephanie Na and Jessica Speechley were in a large group tied for third at one-under.

England's Laura Davies, 52, slumped to a 77.

The men's and women's Victorian Opens are being held concurrently at the 36-hole layout at 13th Beach.
