Website alleges Chinese censorship

A website that facilitates Chinese internet users to see censored pages says its service is under attack, coinciding with pressure from Chinese officials.

A website that helps Chinese internet users see censored pages says it is the target of a massive denial-of-service attack and is struggling to stay online.

GreatFire.org has written in a post that the actions started on Tuesday in the first such attack ever directed at the site.

The site says it doesn't know who has launched the attacks but says that they have coincided with increased pressure from Chinese officials.

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology is not answering phone calls seeking comment.

GreatFire.org says it is receiving 2.6 billion requests an hour - which it has described as useless traffic designed to overwhelm the site.

The organisation says the attack is costing the site $US30,000 ($A39,300) a day to stay up.

The group doesn't reveal where it's based or who runs it.
