The A-League kicks off tonight with the Western Sydney Wanderers looking for some redemption against Adelaide after their big derby loss against Sydney FC last week.
The extent of the four-nil drubbing was, perhaps, an unkind reflection of the match itself.
However, the news that club captain Nikolai Topor-Stanley will be out once again - this time to allow him to speak with an overseas club about a possible move away from Australia - won't please Wanderers fans.
Coach Tony Popovic is aware his side needs to bounce back in Adelaide - the match is also a repeat of last season's grand final, which Adelaide won 3-1.
"You never forget those moments in grand finals whether you win one or lose one, so we certainly remember the last time we were in Adelaide and this is an opportunity for us to put in a better performance and try win in Adelaide this time."
That match will be on SBS tonight with coverage getting underway at 7.30pm.
The pick of the other fixtures is Saturday's Melbourne derby.
It will be Melbourne City signing Tim Cahill's first taste of a derby since he returned to play in this country.
Cahill experienced the Merseyside derby when he was with Everton in the British Premier League, and he knows just what it means to play against cross-town rival Melbourne Victory.
"Any derby that's played - the biggest thing is the fans. It's having the keys to the city for your supporters. And it's a big, big thing."
In the National Basketball League a former two-time NBA winner will make his home debut for the Sydney Kings against the Cairns Taipans.
Josh Powell will be aiming to show the skills that has seen the 33-year-old win trophies all over the world, including Europe - where he won two national titles, Asia and South America.
Powell believes his experience both from the American NBA and elsewhere will be useful.
"When I was in Puerto Rico and China, you know, I had more of a scoring demand as well as rebounding and defending. But I've been in other places like when I went to Argentina, you know, not so much. It was a little bit different and I had to adjust to that. So the game is all about adjustments and, you know, I'm here to be a part of something special and not cause problems and be a headache so that's my thing."
SBS's coverage of the NBL continues this weekend at 3 pm on Sunday when Melbourne United takes on the Illawarra Hawks.
International Rugby League heads from its traditional Eastern States heartland to the West Coast this weekend.
Saturday afternoon's test match between Australia and New Zealand takes place in Perth.
New Zealand has picked a physically big team to take on Australia in new coach David Kidwell's first match in charge.
Kangaroos forward Sam Thaiday knows he'll be in for a torrid time against a Kiwi outfit with plenty of heavyweight players.
The test is a warm-up for the fifth staging of the Four Nations tournament being held in England later this month.
Also playing will be England and Scotland.
Australia and New Zealand will also go had to head in netball with game three of the Constellation Cup in Auckland.
Whichever team wins Saturday's clash will take the lead in the four-match tournament after New Zealand levelled the series during the week.
And China will be at the centre of the tennis world this weekend with the leading men's players in action at the Shanghai Masters, as they attempt to qualify for the season ending Masters tournament in London.
And the top women's players are on court at the Tianjin Open.
