It's been a series that has captivated cricket fans both in Australia and India, but also around the wider cricketing world.

Such has been the intensity on and off the pitch, it's fitting that both nations can win the series if they finish on top in Dharamsala.

Despite all the posturing and on-field finger pointing, the series has been a thrilling encounter and an exciting finale is in store.

Australia captain Steve Smith can't wait for Saturday afternoon to arrive.

"Plenty to play for in Dharmasala. It's going to be another great test match to be involved in and hopefully this Australian cricket team can continue to adapt and show some fight and resilience, and put another good display on in Dharmasala."

In the A-League tonight the Western Sydney Wanderers will look to secure their first back-to-back wins of the Hyundai A-League season when they welcome Melbourne City to Sydney.

The Wanderers are winless in their last three matches with Melbourne City, but a win tonight would cement a spot in the finals.

You can see live coverage of that match on SBS Viceland from 7.30 pm.

Sydney FC supporters will have to wait until Sunday afternoon to see if their team can finally wrap up the Premiers Plate that is awarded to the side that finishes on top after the regular season.

The Sky Blues travel to Perth to play the Glory, but it won't be an easy match for Graham Arnold's team.

He knows 5th placed Perth have to win to keep their hopes of just making the finals alive.

"There's no trophies being handed out yet. And at the end of the day it's about preparation for the Perth game. We know that we enjoy the trip to Perth, we've had a lot of good success there in the past and we expect to do that again on Sunday."

The Formula One season gets underway at Melbourne's Albert Park this weekend with Daniel Ricciardo hoping this is the year he can become the first Australian to win his home Grand Prix.

There have been rule changes to the specifications of all cars, with wider tyres allowing more aerodynamic downforce.

And for all the teams, including the 27 year-old Ricciardo's Red Bull outfit, the wait is almost over.

"I'm hanging out to race, ready to go. And we'll see how we go on track. I think we won't know until we get the cars out on the weekend, but I'm pumped and definitely planning a good solid successful weekend."

And if the sound of Formula One engines isn't your thing, there's plenty of AFL action for the most popular spectator sport in Australia to get excited about, with nine games to start round 1.

Collingwood face the reigning Premier Western Bulldogs tonight, while on Sunday the Adelaide Crows are up against the Greater Western Sydney Giants.

The Giants lost to Sydney in last season's semi-final, and like all teams this time round, they'll be hoping to make a good start says coach Leon Cameron.

"I think it takes a little while to get into a little bit of rhythm. Each club is probably looking for that rhythm early, you know everyone wants to get off in round 1 with a win. Have we improved? I expect us to improve this weekend going on what I've seen over the pre-season. But in saying that Adelaide in Adelaide in front of 50,000 supporters, they very rarely get beaten at home."

There are two other matches on Sunday with North Melbourne and West Coast Eagles meeting in the earlier game, while Fremantle and Geelong meet following the Crows-Giants match.

In the NRL this weekend arguably the biggest match of the round takes place on Saturday night when the Parramatta Eels meet the reigning Premier Cronulla Sharks.
