The Central Coast Mariners have stolen the spotlight by signing former Liverpool, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid star Luis Garcia to the struggling A League team.
The 37-year-old former Spanish International has arrived in Sydney just two weeks after playing for the Liverpool Legends against the Australia Legends team.
Garcia hasn't played a competitive match in a year but is hoping he can play a part in the bottom club's game on Saturday against the Western Sydney Wanderers.
"I have to take care of some stuff, I don't get crazy I don't try to think that I'm 25 anymore, I'm not. But I feel very good and I'm confident that I can give big things to the team and like I said I'll be here to help."
The first match of round 16 takes place tonight with top of the table Brisbane Roar hosting Adelaide United in a match that can be seen on SBS2 from 7.30 Eastern Daylight Saving Time.
In cricket, tomorrow at the SCG Australia will look to complete a series clean sweep against India in the fifth and final One Day match of the series.
Attention will then turn to the upcoming Test Tour of New Zealand where Australia will replace India at the top of the test cricket rankings with a series victory.
NSW wicketkeeper Peter Nevil is a part of the test squad and says although the chance to become number one is important, the team must focus first on winning.
"Our goal as a team is to be the number one test playing nation but having said that, I've always found you focus on the process and the outcome will look after itself. So its something that might be in the back of people's minds but I mean its not going to do us any good worrying about it we need to go over there and play good cricket and win the series."
Australia has included Jackson Bird and Chadd Sayers in the squad as cover for fast bowing trio Josh Hazlewood, James Pattinson and Peter Siddle.
Australia will play two Tests and three One Day matches on the tour which begins Feburary 3.
In the Big Bash League, the final of this year's tournament will take place on Sunday with the Perth Scorchers in contention for a third successive title.
They'll face the Melbourne Stars in the second semi-final tonight in front of an expected crowd in excess of 50-thousand at the MCG.
The winner will meet the Sydney Thunder.
In cycling, the Tour Down Under comes to a climax in Adelaide on Sunday afternoon with the sixth and final stage being a 90-kilometre race around the city centre, starting and ending on King William Street.
The race's reputation has grown since its first instalment back in 1999 when Stuart O'Grady won.
The event is now recognised as the biggest road race in the southern hemisphere and is also part of the prestigious UCI World Tour.
Early race leader Caleb Ewan will be tested by other local favourites Riche Porte and last year's winner Rohan Dennis, who will both be pushing hard for overall victory.
And in golf this weekend some of the sport's biggest names will contest the Abu Dhabi championship.
Jordan Spieth will look to retain his world number one ranking against some strong competition including world number three Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland.
With world number two Jason Day not competing at the event, the 26-year-old McIlroy can overtake the Australian in the rankings.
McIlroy admits he wants to return to the top of world golf sooner rather than later.
"I know I need to play well this week to leapfrog (world number two) Jason (Day). I think if I can finish second then I can get up above him. I have made not secret of the fact that I want to get back to that position (world number one) and to do it as quick as possible. It is definitely a motivation."
Between them, McIlroy and Spieth have won four of the past eight major championships.
The event in Dubai will be the first meeting between them this season.
