Weekend sport preview

SBS World News Radio: There's plenty of sport over the weekend quite apart from the first test between Australia and South Africa at the WACA, with A-League and Premier League football, boxing, basketball and the New York Marathon to look forward to.

Round 5 of the A-League kicks off tonight when Brisbane Roar takes on Melbourne City.

After wins for the Roar against Newcastle and Perth, the home side is aiming for a third straight win.

Melbourne City has a doubt about Tim Cahill's fitness but Roar defender Luke Devere says Cahill being in or out won't affect his team's approach.

"Oh you know I think it's great for the league that he's come back and he's a fantastic ambassador for the game. But I think for myself and the other boys it's the same sort of game for us no matter who we're facing. Regardless of what players have done in the past we'll go out there and play our game and do what we have to do."

The big match in the English Premier League sees Arsenal and Tottenham going head-to-head in the North London derby on Sunday evening.

Arsenal's form has been strong this season, lying joint top with Manchester City, while Tottenham hasn't won any of its last six matches.

A lot of attention has been on Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger in his 20th year in charge of the club, with speculation mounting this could be his final season at the club.

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech says Wenger will be the one that decides when to call time on his coaching career.

"I think it is up to Mr Wenger to decide how long he wants to carry on and as far as I can see he has the same motivation and the same hunger for training and games that he had last season when I started working with him so it is probably up to him."

In Rugby League action, Australia faces its first serious hit-out of the Four Nations Tournament when the Kangaroos take on New Zealand in Coventry.

Australia has the recent edge against New Zealand outscoring the Kiwis by a combined margin of 42 points.

The winner of the Sunday morning's match will inch closer to a place in the tournament final.

In the United States the New York City Marathon takes place this Sunday with ideal cool and dry weather conditions forecast.

While 75 per cent of the approximately 50,000 runners will be competing in their first New York Marathon, at the elite end of the scale organisers are expecting last year's winners to do well once again.

The race director is Peter Ciaccia and he's looking forward to the event.

"Well we have returning champions Stanley Biwott and Mary Keitany coming back. Both of them are coming back from great wins last year. Mary actually could make it a *three-peat here in New York. So we're really excited about that."

The race will be run on Monday, Australian time.

In boxing this weekend, Philippines Senator Manny Pacquiao steps back into the ring for the first time since retiring in April.

He'll be up against Jessie Vargas in Las Vegas on Sunday.

Should Pacquiao win, it would increase the chances of him lining up another huge payday against Floyd Mayweather.

The pair's first fight was the richest in boxing history, raking in a mind-boggling $915 million in revenue.

But before that can happen Pacquiao says he's got to get used to being a politician and a fighter.

"It's going to be a historical fight basically because this my first fight being a senator. I tell you this. Don't do this. Being a senator in a fight is not easy if you don't have discipline yourself."

And finally in basketball this weekend, round six of the season will be completed.

SBS has live coverage of the Illawarra Hawks match against Melbourne United from 2.30pm AEDT on Sunday afternoon.
