The biggest ever crowd in football's A-League, watching Sydney FC take on the Western Sydney Wanderers, has headlined the start of a new season.

Just under 62,000 people turned up to Olympic Stadium to see what became a dominant performance by Sydney FC.

The Sky Blues won 4-0, with the best goal of the night scored by Brandon O'Neill, direct from a free kick.

Simon Hill of Fox Sports was the commentator:

"Who is it going to be from the set piece? It's Brandon O'Neill. It's 3! It's done and dusted, the derby. It's Sydney FC again."

The victory was Sydney's fourth in succession against the Wanderers, but the biggest talking point was the fact the crowd made sporting history in Sydney.

It was the largest non-finals attendance for any code ever seen at Olympic Stadium, something the players appreciated.

Sydney FC defender Rhyan Grant explained why.

"To get a crowd like that and set the record for the A-League was massive. The atmosphere is always great at the derby, and the stadium's so big, and so many fans there, they did everyone credit. It was beautiful."

In other matches over the weekend, defending champion Adelaide United was held to a 1-1 draw at Newcastle, while Central Coast pulled out a remarkable draw in Perth.

The Mariners trailed the Perth Glory 3-0 at half-time but rallied in the second half to earn a draw.

To tennis, and Australia's Nick Kyrgios has celebrated the biggest win of his career, beating David Goffin in the final of the Japan Open.

Kyrgios produced some trademark brilliance against his Belgian opponent to claim his third tour title.

After collectiing the trophy, the 21-year-old addressed the Tokyo crowd and explained why he had enjoyed the week so much.

"The food was unbelievable this week, and the crowd was unbelievable. You guys, the crowd is amazing here. It's always packed out every match I played, so, you know, that was really amazing, so I'm going to come here for sure for my whole career.

In motorsport, there was high drama at Bathurst, with Will Davison clinching his second title at the famous Mount Panorama Circuit.

Earlier, Jamie Whincup was involved in a crash which race stewards decided warranted a 15-second penalty.

Whincup had looked in control of the race after breaking the all-time lap record on the course, but the penalty against the four-time champion ended his chances.

In rugby, the Wallabies defeated Argentina 33-21 in London to finish second in the Rugby Championship.

Samu Kerevi's two tries and another by Dean Mumm late in the match put the result beyond doubt.

Despite a poor start to the tournament, Wallabies coach Michael Cheika says he is happy with his side's progress.

"We've played better attacking footy as the tournament's gone on. Like I said, when we shaped up nicely tonight, we made some good breaks. We got a four-try bonus in that game, as we did in Perth as well that time, so those things are starting to come."

New Zealand, meanwhile, has claimed its biggest ever win against South Africa and secured a 17th straight win.

The All Blacks' 57-15 victory means they will be looking to become the first team to win 18 successive tests when they take on the Wallabies later this month.

To basketball, and the Adelaide 36ers have secured their first win of the season with a dominant display against Melbourne United.

Melbourne fought back late in the final quarter but was no match for the firing 36ers, going down 87-79.

And finally to netball, and the Diamonds began the Constellation Cup against New Zealand with a 68-56 win.

Australia equalled its highest-ever score against the Silver Ferns in the process.

The four-test series continues in Launceston on Wednesday.
