Mixed feelings at the top of the AFL this weekend.

The Adelaide Crows are only four points clear in first place after being six points clear heading into the round.

But they managed to rally from a huge fifty-point deficit early in the third quarter to salvage a draw with Collingwood- Mitch McGovern kicking a goal after time had expired to give the Crows two points.

No such consolation for the Sydney Swans, though.

Their seven-match winning streak curtailed by Hawthorn- with a dose of controversy.

The AFL score review system failing to deny a goal by Hawthorn's Liam Shiels that the Swans thought should have been denied- and it proved to be the difference, with the winning margin six points.

Swans coach John Longmire believes better technology is required to make the score review system truly worthwhile.

"I really like the concept of the goal review, but unless we get better cameras, it almost defeats the purpose of it. I really like the idea that you try and get the right score- the right score is what it's all about. But surely there's better vision that we can achieve- there's better cameras, or better views that we can get."

Last time the Swans lost prior to this game against Hawthorn...was their previous match against the Hawthorn in late May.

In rugby league...worrying signs for the Manly Sea Eagles.

They're on track to make the finals for now...placed inside the competition's top eight teams.

But their last two matches have resulted in heavy defeats- one to St George Illawarra, and now, a 40 points to 6 thrashing at the hands of rugby league's number one-ranked team, the Melbourne Storm.

It was a great way for Storm captain Cameron Smith to celebrate his 350th match for the club.

But not such a great way for the Sea Eagles to show they can challenge the top squads in the competition at the business end of the season.

Manly coach Trent Barrett isn't mincing words.

"We just made too many mistakes, and missed too many tackles. That's two weeks in a row now we've been really, really poor. And we need to address it, and address it in a hurry."

There aren't too many athletes in the world who can say they're looking forward to racing Usain Bolt.

But it appears you can put U-S sprinter Justin Gatlin in that category.

Gatlin finished second behind Bolt in the men's 100 metre sprint at last year's Olympics, and also at the last two world championships.

And with this year's world championships in London looming, after which Bolt is scheduled to retire, Gatlin gets one more chance at beating a legend- and says it's an exciting time.

"It's going to be amazing you know because it's a special time it's not just me and Usain (Bolt) but you have so many young athletes that are coming up. I think that's going to be the special thing about it is not just such a predominant figure who's going to make a void in our sport but it's going to be filled by such young athletes and athletes who are there now who want to make a name for themselves so it's going to be a crazy time and the changing of the guard for many."

Interestingly, Gatlin says he thinks Bolt may reverse at some point his decision to retire.

And we're now less than a fortnight from the start of the new English Premier League campaign, with preparations now fevered both on and off the field.

Liverpool have never been champions of England since the Premier League came into being in 1992.

But that's not deterring their latest attempt.

Over the weekend, they defeated German side Hertha Berlin three-nil in a preseason match.

Despite that, coach Jurgen Klopp has mixed feelings.

He says things are not ideal at the moment- but his men know how the preseason has to be handled.

"We are not where we want to be but we appreciate we have to work hard and especially in England we have only this one pre-season and a long, long season. So at the moment it's good that everyone looks really positive. That's how it should be."

Liverpool start their Premier League campaign away to Watford on August the 12th.
