It wasn't much of a contest between the Cats and the Sydney Swans in their AFL match at the MCG, with Geelong downing Sydney by 59 points.

The Swans had seemed unstoppable in the lead up, but that momentum came to a grinding halt in Friday night's semifinal.

The weekend's other game saw Greater Western Sydney beat West Coast 125 to 58.

It wasn't the send off Eagles players Sam Mitchell, Matt Priddis and Drew Petrie had hoped for.

Giants coach Leon Cameron says he's proud of the way his team bounced back after last week's loss to Adelaide.

"We were disappointing for a quarter last week. Everyone knows that. There's only one way to sort of respond to that and that's come out and play a pretty good game the next week. I think you've clearly seen that's what Geelong and us have done in the semi finals. No one likes to get beaten like we both probably did in that first week."

They will now face Richmond, with Geelong to meet the Adelaide Crows on Friday night.

In NRL, North Queensland is one game away from reaching the grand final from eighth spot, a feat most recently achieved in 2009 by Parramatta.

Meanwhile the Brisbane Broncos made short work of Penrith at Suncorp Stadium, the final score reading 13-6.

A referee decision saw the Panthers denied a near-certain try in the 21st minute.

A collision left Brisbane winger Corey Oates unconscious, with the call to suspend play leading to fears it may encourage players to feign injuries.

Elsewhere, the Wallabies have come from behind to record their first Rugby Championship win against Argentina 45-20.

Wallabies coach Michael Cheika's irritation with his team's early performance was obvious, and he says players got the message.

"I didn't need to because they said it themselves. That's a step forward for our leadership team because they told it as it was at half time, didn't try and hide from the lack of intensity and urgency that was there, and that they needed to pick it up and own it. And they did that in the second half."

They will now take on the Springboks.

To football, and Manchester City has taken top spot after demolishing Watford 6-nil in the English Premier League.

Burnley held Liverpool to a 1-1 draw, Huddersfield finished similarly against Leicester City, and Newcastle beat Stoke City 2-1.

Closer to home, Australia's women's team, the Matildas, has had their confidence boosted, defeating Brazil 2-1 in front of a sold out crowd in Penrith.

Forward Caitlin Foord says the side has high hopes.

"These are all short term goals to win. But we have a goal as a team, we want to become world champions and win Olympic medals. So this is just kind of the start of that journey. And yeah, we're just trying to get ourselves ready for when that time comes."

Australia and India have faced off in the first match of the one-day cricket series in the Indian city of Chennai.

The two sides are still recovering after a series of verbal battles earlier in the year during the Border-Gavaskar series which India won 2-1.

Indian captain Virat Kohli says his squad treats every series the same, regardless of their opponent.

"Obviously you will assess the strengths and weaknesses of all sides but as I said before, you can't raise or decrease your intensity according to who you are playing against. That's not being fair to the sport and that's something that we as a team do not believe in. So, we like prepare the same way and we would play with same kind of intensity regardless of who we are playing against."

In tennis, and John Peers and Jordan Thompson have cruised to victory in their Davis Cup match in just 90 minutes, beating Belgian duo Ruben Bemelmans and Arthur De Greef in straight sets.

And it's been an all-Brazilian result at the World Surf League event in Lower Trestles, California, with Filipe Toledo taking out the men's competition after Silvana Lima triumphed in the women's.
