It’s what every keen skier and snowboarder has been hoping for- a definitive start to the Australian ski season.
An unusually warm autumn prompted a slow start for ski resorts in New South Wales and Victoria- but finally the snow gods have delivered.
Thredbo ski resort is reporting 80 cm of the white stuff has fallen in the past 24 hours, with temperatures dropping below zero throughout Tuesday.
At nearby Perisher, 50 cm of natural snow has fallen with snow showers forecast for the rest of the week.
Bad weather, strong winds
New South Wales residents have been warned to keep children and pets indoors on Tuesday afternoon, with winds expected to reach speeds of 110 kilometres an hour.
Sheep graziers are being warned that cold temperatures, showers and strong westerly winds could see a ‘high risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.’
In South Australia, a gale warning has been issued for Central Coast, South Central Coast, Upper South East Coast and Lower South East Coast.
Almost 80,000 homes have lost power across Victoria and storm surges have caused flooding in central Melbourne.
There are marine wind warnings in place across the state with gale force winds hitting the West Coast, Central Coast and East Gippsland Coast. Strong wind is also expected in Port Phillip, Western Port, Gippsland Lakes and Central Gippsland Coast.
People in the Mallee, Wimmera, Northern Country, North Central, North East, South West, Central, West and South Gippsland and East Gippsland districts are being urged to be alert as destructive and damaging winds head their way.
