We'll consult on plebiscite committee: PM

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says the make up of committees for both yes and no sides on the gay marriage plebiscite will be based on precedent.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has promised to consult thoroughly on the make-up of the committees that will manage $15 million in public funding for the plebiscite on gay marriage.

A 10 member committee - with five on each side - will consist of government, opposition and crossbench MPs and five non-parliamentarians from the yes and no advocacy groups.

"We will obviously consult widely," Mr Turnbull told parliament on Tuesday, promising it will be a fair process based on precedent.
