Weller joins star Saints on the sidelines

Maverick Weller is out of the Saints trip to New Zealand, alongside Leigh Montagna and Nick Riewoldt, Riewoldt a week-to-week proposition at this stage.

St Kilda midfielder Maverick Weller has joined star duo Nick Riewoldt and Leigh Montagna on the sidelines ahead of the Saints' Anzac Day clash against Carlton.

Weller (calf) was the only omission from a 25-man squad for the Wellington clash named on Wednesday evening, with the club ruling out Riewoldt (calf) and Montagna (knee) earlier in the day.

Riewoldt was a late withdrawal from the side defeated by Collingwood last week, while Montagna has been unable to regain fitness after aggravating a knee injury in round one.

"Nick's injury is probably at the stage where we thought to test him for this week would put him in danger of doing further damage," football manager Jamie Cox said on Wednesday. "We've withdrawn him early and he won't be making the trip to Wellington.

"If we were playing at home, he wouldn't have been available either unfortunately.

"It's irrespective of travel."

Cox said there was no guarantee the skipper would return for round five, labelling him a week by week proposition.

Tom Curren, Tom Hickey, Eli Templeton and Darren Minchington were added to the squad that fell to the Pies by 74 points.

For the Blues, first-round draft pick Blaine Boekhorst is a chance to make his AFL debut after he was named on the bench in an extended squad.

With an injury cloud over Michael Jamison (shoulder), tall defender Kristian Jaksch has also been included, with Chris Yarran (suspension) and Irishman Ciaran Byrne (hamstring) dropping out.
