Wellingham axed, Eagles get serious in AFL

West Coast will aim to break their three-game AFL losing streak when they confront Fremantle in their western derby at Patersons Stadium.

West Coast midfielder Sharrod Wellingham has become a high-profile casualty of the Eagles' three-match losing run, with the former Magpie axed for Sunday's AFL western derby against Fremantle.

And Dockers coach Ross Lyon says Hayden Ballantyne isn't on his last warning just yet, despite the goalsneak's repeated brushes with the tribunal.

Wellingham has tallied just 13 possessions in each of his past two games, with new coach Adam Simpson losing patience ahead of what shapes as a crucial game to West Coast's finals fortunes.

The Eagles have been bolstered by the return of skipper Darren Glass and Shannon Hurn, while Simon Tunbridge has also earned a recall.

First-year midfielder Dom Sheed and Jeremy McGovern join Wellingham as omissions.

Wellingham has struggled to reach his potential since crossing to West Coast at the end of 2012.

Two serious ankle injuries blighted his progress last year, while his solid start to 2014 was brought undone by poor performances in recent losses to Port Adelaide and Carlton.

Fremantle suffered a huge blow on Friday when smooth-moving midfielder Stephen Hill succumbed to a hamstring injury.

His late withdrawal paved the way for Matt de Boer to return to the side after he was initially dropped.

The Dockers welcome back Ballantyne and Michael Barlow, while Tom Sheridan is omitted.

Ballantyne returns after serving his one-match ban for striking and kneeing Sydney defender Rhyce Shaw a fortnight ago.

It was Ballantyne's fourth suspension in just over two years, raising questions about his discipline.

Lyon loves Ballantyne's aggression and attack on the ball, but says the 26-year-old needs to be careful not to go overboard.

"He plays on the edge. I don't want Hayden to change too much," Lyon said.

"When his aggression is chasing and at the ball, he's a pretty special little player for us.

"There's no last notice.

"There's (been) no king hits. Sometimes it's just reflexes and a bit of frustration, so we need to control that a bit better than we have - not only Hayden, but the whole group."

Wingman Anthony Morabito is expected to play in the WAFL this weekend despite succumbing to a bout of tonsillitis earlier this week.

Morabito is closing in on a dream AFL recall after making a successful return from a third knee reconstruction.
