Star North Melbourne midfielder Daniel Wells is facing a race against time to prove his fitness for Saturday's AFL clash against Essendon.

Wells suffered a severely corked leg during last weekend's match against St Kilda, although he managed to return to the field and make a couple of crucial smothers in the dying stages of the seven-point win.

"Daniel has pulled up quite well considering how severe the corky was," Kangaroos director of football Geoff Walsh told the club website.

"We're hopeful he will be available for selection, but we'll have to see how he trains this week.

"With a six-day break, time obviously plays a role in his recovery, but our medical team will do everything they can to make sure he's fit."

Utility Sam Wright will also face a fitness test on the ankle injury that ruled him out of the game against the Saints, while defender Lachlan Hansen will have to pass a concussion test.

The table-topping Kangaroos will be short-priced favourites to extend their unbeaten start to the season against the Bombers.
