Tony Abbott is using the second anniversary of the coalition's election win to spruik his government's economic achievements.

The prime minister is addressing a small business breakfast in Canberra on Monday, highlighting the creation of 335,000 new jobs since 2013, restored business confidence and the free trade deal with China.

"The plan is working and we are sticking with the plan," Mr Abbott told the Seven Network when asked if he needed to do more to win over voters after the latest Newspoll showing the coalition trailing Labor 46-54 per cent.

Mr Abbott raised the prospect of tax cuts for "hard-working middle Australians" and small business as the government heads into an election year.

"This is a government which wants our people to be as prosperous as possible," he told reporters.

Mr Abbott said he was confident that on election day Australians would be choosing between a government which had delivered on its commitments and an opposition that "hadn't learned and can't change".
