The temporary arrest of a British couple for taking their ill son overseas for treatment without doctors' consent has prompted questions about parents' authority in medical decision-making.

Ben and Naghemeh King took their five-year-old son, Ashya - who has a severe brain tumour - out of an English hospital to receive medical treatment which they say was only available abroad.

Nikola Stepanov is from the University of Queensland's Medical Ethics and Law department.

She spoke to Zara Zaher about Australia's laws surrounding parental medical decision-making on behalf of their children.
