A recording of a robot has sparked a debate on social media with people divided over whether they hear the word 'Yanny' or 'Laurel'.

Dubbed the new "Gold/Blue dress" debate, social media users are arguing the name said by a bot in a recording posted on Twitter.

Social media users either hear "Yanny" or "Laurel". Take a listen below:

While some can rest on their "laurels", many have sparked a debate about how two people can hear different names.

One Twitter user wrote: "How are y'all hearing Yanny? It clear as day says laurel".

Another wrote: "My wife heard yanny. I hear Laurel. How is it possible that people can hear one word or the other?

Ellen DeGeneres tweeted that her show had to be stopped so her audience could find out which name they heard.

Some Twitter uses suggested a change of frequency, possibly through a change of speakers, could determine what you hear.
