What does Mattarella's appointment mean for Italy?

Italian politicians have elected a constitutional court judge and veteran centre-left politician, Sergio Mattarella, as president.

Mr Mattarella was the candidate endorsed by newly-elected Italian Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi.

Italian MP Marco Fedi represents the overseas constituency for Italians abroad that includes Australia.

He spoke to Zara Zaher about what the appointment of Mr Mattarella means for Italy, beginning with a background on the new President.
