A major defection in the Pakistani Taliban is raising questions about the future of the armed group after years of insurgency.

 

Members of the Mehsud tribe who've announced their separation from the Tehreek-e-Taliban say they don't support attacks on civilian and public targets, and have accused its leadership of criminal activity.

 

Some observers are attributing the developments to action by the Pakistani army.

 

Professor Greg Barton is the International Director of the Global Terrorism Research Centre at Monash University in Melbourne.

 

Kristina Kukolja asked Professor Barton whether the military can take the credit for the split.
