A video uploaded by an amateur scientist and popular YouTube identity has given a unique perspective on the sugar content of your favourite cola beverage.

'Crazy Russian Hacker', who regularly creates videos testing armchair hypotheses, tricks and shortcuts, wanted to illustrate to the world what goes into your body when you consume soft drink.

"It says 55 grams," he says. "But what is it, actually? How much is that?"

With the camera rolling, he boils down cola on a stovetop pot to reveal a thick, sticky black residue.
"So, this is so much sugar from one litre bottle of soda," he says as he stirs the tar-like substance.

"It's insane. Look how black it is."

The video has been viewed more than 1.5 million times.
