What they said on Day 33 of the campaign

What leaders Scott Morrison and Bill Shorten and their teams said today in the election campaign.

WHAT THEY SAID ON DAY 33 OF THE ELECTION CAMPAIGN

THE BEST LINE

"Bill Shorten has a three-letter slogan. It is T-A-X."

- Slogans just keep getting shorter and shorter, Scott Morrison thinks.

PRIME MINISTER SCOTT MORRISON

"My view has always been you don't have to pick sides ... you stand by your friends and you stand by your customers as well."

- On how he would manage Australia's relationship with global giants US and China.

"I'm very happy for this election to be about who you want to be prime minister, me or Bill Shorten."

- Asked what he's doing wrong since the polls still show Labor on track for victory.

LABOR LEADER BILL SHORTEN

"I want to talk to as many Australians as I can, directly, about Labor's plans to end the chaos, to stop the cuts, to start to vote for real climate action."

- He won't comment on the public polls but he will do his darndest to win every vote possible.

"I don't know what Mr Palmer is doing in Fiji, and I'm not sure if he told me you'd automatically believe it anyway, would you?"

- On reports the big-spending wannabe senator has been spotted dining in a tropical resort.

REAL PEOPLE

"I touched his hand!"

- A Gosford schoolgirl to her friend after meeting Shorten.

"I got a video."

- The friend's reply.

THE SUPPORT CAST

"Scott Morrison is just Tony Abbott in a baseball cap."

- Labor's Kristina Keneally reminding people that on this day in 2014 the coalition handed down a heavy-cutting budget.

"They're not the big end of town, I mean that is an insult to every successful small businessman who's worked hard, accumulated a bit and wants to leave it to his kids. ... This fellow Shorten is after those people."

- Former prime minister John Howard joining former prime minister Tony Abbott on the streets of Warringah.
