Melissa Chan worked as a China correspondent for Al Jazeera television for five years before being expelled from the country last year.
She'd covered a range of subjects, but, most notably, she investigated China's illegal detention centres, known as black jails.
After being expelled from China, Ms Chan took a year off in the United States to research any tools and training which might protect journalists from government-sponsored hacker attacks.
She's in Australia for a Public Knowledge Forum organised by the University of Sydney's U-S Studies Centre to discuss the future of democracy and the changing face of journalism.
Melissa Chan talked with Ron Sutton about the hacking threat to the world's media organisations -- and the threat to people getting their news.
