What we know about the Salt Creek case

The alleged attack on two backpackers at Salt Creek in South Australia's Coorong rocked the state. Here's what we know about the case so far.

WHAT WE KNOW:

* A 60-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to seven charges over the alleged attack on two female backpackers.

* The accused is alleged to have used a hammer and a knife in the February attack at the remote Salt Creek in SA's Coorong National Park.

* The charges include attempted murder, aggravated kidnapping and indecent assault.

SALT CREEK AND THE COORONG:

* Salt Creek is in the heart of the national park, about 200km southeast of Adelaide.

* Sweeping sand dunes shelter a string of saltwater lagoons from the Southern Ocean within the park.

* Popular spot for fishermen and campers and is culturally significant to the Ngarringdjeri people.
