What we think of health insurance

An online government survey asks if higher health insurance premiums should be charged based on various health risk factors.

WHAT AUSTRALIANS ARE BEING ASKED ABOUT PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCE

* Why we take out hospital cover: the ability to access high-quality care; choose our doctor; choose timing of treatment; ability to receive treatment in a private hospital; take pressure off the public system.

* Why we have "extras" cover for treatments and services not covered by Medicare.

* What we want covered that is not now such as community-based palliative care; diagnostic imaging; radiation therapy; renal dialysis; medical oncology/chemotherapy; GP and specialist consultations.

* Should insurers be allowed to vary premiums for smokers, the aged, those with health-risk factors such as obesity and specific gender.
