What's next for the AFL's oldest players

Hawthorn stalwart Shaun Burgoyne and Fremantle's Aaron Sandilands are among the AFL veterans that will play on in 2019.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR THE AFL'S OLD GUARD?

* SHAUN BURGOYNE (35, Hawthorn) - The AFL's oldest active player, evergreen Burgoyne - who turns 36 in October - this month signed a one-year contract extension. The deal means he could break Adam Goodes' indigenous record of 372 matches.

* AARON SANDILANDS (35, Fremantle) - Gigantic ruckman Sandilands has committed to a 17th season despite recent injuries. Teammate Michael Johnson (33) will retire but former skipper David Mundy will play on and could become just the second player from a WA club to reach 300 games.

* DALE MORRIS (35, Western Bulldogs) - The hard-as-nails backman recently marked his 250th game and is highly likely to play on next year. Still a key contributor when fit.

* JARRAD WAITE (35, North Melbourne) - The former Carlton key forward will retire after Sunday's clash with St Kilda - his 244th AFL appearance. Persistent calf injuries have plagued his time at Arden St.

* KADE SIMPSON (34, Carlton) - Uncontracted but both club and player are keen to strike a new one-year deal. Still clearly among the rebuilding Blues' best players.

* GARY ABLETT (34, Geelong) - The little master is contracted for 2019 and still playing at a very high level since making his dream return to Kardinia Park. Certain to extend his decorated career into an 18th season.

* LUKE HODGE (34, Brisbane) - Like Ablett, Hodge remains contracted and his leadership is vital for the inexperienced Lions. Could reach the 350-game mark if he stays fit next year.

* DANIEL WELLS (33, Collingwood) - Wells has a deal for 2019 and is keen to play on despite another shocking injury run this season. Managed just four games this year but still silky-smooth at his best.

* JARRAD MCVEIGH (33, Sydney) - Sydney are yet to decide whether to offer their 2012 premiership skipper a new deal. Could be an asset at a club such as Gold Coast if the Swans decide to move on.

* BRENDON GODDARD (33, Essendon) - Time could be up for the former St Kilda utility, with the Bombers announcing he won't receive a new deal. The dual All-Australian may look to play on at a third club.
