Where senators stand on school funding

Education Minister Simon Birmingham is counting his senators closely as he navigates the federal government school funding overhaul through the upper house.

The federal government needs 39 votes to have its school funding package clear the Senate. So where do the key players stand?

SUPPORTING: 34

* At least 28 of the coalition's own 29 senators.

* Independent senator Derryn Hinch.

* The four Pauline Hanson One Nation senators.

* Independent Lucy Gichuhi.

COULD BE CONVINCED: 15

* The nine Greens senators who have been offered a compromise that includes reducing the rollout timetable from 10 years to six; more accountability over state government funding, and an independent watchdog.

* Three senators from the Nick Xenophon Team whose concerns are similar to those of the Greens.

* Liberal senator Chris Back who wants a year-long inquiry into the way parental capacity to pay is calculated after raising concerns planned changes will hit Catholic schools hard. The Catholic sector claims he's not the only Liberal with concerns.

* Liberal Democrat David Leyonhjelm was definitely opposed last week but after seeing independent modelling thinks it's not as bad as it could be.

* Independent Jacqui Lambie last week said the government couldn't count on her support "at this stage", but she could be moved by more money for public schools and more accountability for the states.

OPPOSED: 27

* Labor's 26 senators.

* Australian Conservatives senator Cory Bernardi.
